This page is for those at CURATE Camp 2012 at DLF (and others) who wanted to talk about how to talk about "bootstrapping repository services (getting started with minimal resources) curation & preservation in the wild (sans repo)" but didn't get the chance.

In this space please share what you are doing or would like to be doing at your institution regarding repositories, digital humanities, data management, etc. Please feel free to pose questions and resources as well.

Add new categories whatever you want...

A bit about me... I'm Susan Borda Digital Curation Librarian at UC Merced where we are just getting started with data management services and whatnot. UC Merced is a new (established in 2005) small university of with 5,000+ students offering undergrad through PhD degrees in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering.

Let's get started!

Questions

Q. How do we get started?

A. Prepare a list of resources: storage, IT, software, humans. Start contacting people associated with these resources to see how much they cost and/or what they can provide.

Q. Who should we partner with?

A. Is your campus part of a consortium? Can you work with another college in your area to share expenses/resources?

Q. How do you reach out to researchers/faculty?

A. There isn't one good way to communicate to faculty/researchers. I will be working with someone in our campus Communications office who is responsible for internal communications. I have also been attending various researcher talks on campus and have been meeting researchers that way, telling them about what I do and the services we provide.

Q. How can you implement data preservation best practices outside of a digital repository?

Repository Services

Here are some things we are looking into:

Using resources within the UC system: San Diego Super Computing Center Cloud, Berkeley's Research Hub, CDL's Merritt

Outside of the UC system: Internet2 NET+ Box, Digital Preservation Network, DuraCloud
