(Originally documented by dhillmann in our post-conference proposal.)

Some examples of possible problem sets (all currently being discussed by librarians, in need of some developer input!):

1. There’s currently a discussion going on in the internal CC:DA list about an RDA proposal to deal with issues around ‘affiliation.’ All agree that affiliation is at bottom a relationship between a person and an institution or group, but most of the time ‘affiliation’ is seen in the context of employment or professional association. There is now a proposal to expand that to include affiliation of students with the institutions they attend, and the awarding of degrees by those institutions. One difficulty is dealing with the temporal aspects of those affiliations, which exist whether ‘affiliation’ is interpreted narrowly or broadly. The group might consider how these proposals might play out, what use cases they could serve, and how best to express the information in data so it could be displayed usefully to users.

  • There's been a bit of work done with temporal affiliation aspects in the VIVO ontologies, though I don't think they have modeled student affiilation yet (JMO)

2. One of the criticisms of RDA as it’s currently configured is that there are some significant carryovers from traditional practice that really don’t work well as data. The usual example given for this is the property ‘extent’, which most often is expressed something like: iv, 224 p. ; 26 cm. (in MARC, this is a 300 field, with $a $b). There is a CC:DA Task Force working on an alternate proposal for ‘extent’, which would be more useful as data, with the aspect being measured (height, duration, area/volume) the unit of measure (centimeters, minutes, grams) and the value of the measurement (20, 1.5). A small group could work on testing the data-tization of extent and how the ontologies for aspects and units of measurement might be developed and used.

3. We should really talk about the implications of the recent LC bibliographic framework announcement. There also seems to be some potential to pull together various bits of work and funded projects in shared open knowledge bases. (JMO)
