Faculty outreach early in lifecycle (J. Starr)
Some notes from this session; feel free to add your own.
Joan Starr introduced the topic and started the discussion about strategies for doing outreach to faculty. She played a recording of Sara Shreeves who described how she works with subject specialists, relying on their relationships with faculty and knowledge of their needs.
Jean Deken: Dept of energy schedule for data summarization/description. Level 1, 2, and 3 experiments determine the level of records and length of time that they will be retained. For instance, level 2 is preserved 25 years, Level 3 is 10 years. Raw data is not preserved in the schedule. Faculty sign off on the schedule. It's a good way to prioritize.
Each experiment has a physicist assigned to the data czar role, and she works with them to set up the data services/preservation for that set of experiments.
Steve Marks: Pilot implementation of DataVerse to share data with colleagues. Met some resistance from consortia libraries against allowing faculty to share/not share, but they let faculty decide whether or not they want to share a file(s) or not.
Lynn Yarmey's wishlist: help with the grad student cycle in/out of lab; help with writing a paper long after the experimentation and finding the relevant data; people teaching themselves access
Data management consulting Documentation consulting, and standardization Data organization, and local system design Data base design and consulting Lab best practices Data standards and assistance Field data capture Programming support/software introduction class R support GIS support
____: Institutionally mandated policies for business continuity and disaster risk management -- offsite alternatives to continue work and backup of experiments. These policies have dramatically increased the use of the institutional repository.
Patricia Hswe: Faculty outreach: people coming to librarians for post-award help with data management even though DMP wasn't required when they wrote the grant; looking at JHU data management planning service.
