Letter to Campers - How to Prepare for Preservation Synthesis Camp

September 18, 2012 Greetings, Campers!

Thank you for registering to be a part of CURATECamp iPres 2012, on Tuesday, October 2, in Toronto, from 9am to 5pm at the University of Toronto Chestnut Conference Centre, Armoury Room. We are very excited to share with you what we hope will be a productive and inspiring day.

Proposed agenda (since this is an unconference, this agenda is just to give us a framework... the group can make changes if it seems necessary as the day progresses)

9-10am Overview, review agenda, introductions 10-10:30am Topic selection – This is when we'll populate the grid for the day. We hope to have at least 2 discussions happening concurrently at each of the day's 3 sessions. 10:30-10:45pm Coffee break 10:45-12noon Session 1 12-1:30pm Lunch and lightning talks! - Lunch is provided. Once we all get our food and get back in the room, we'll use the time from 12:30 -1:30pm to listen some 5-minute lightning talks. 1:30-2:45pm Session 2 2:45-3pm Coffee break 3-4pm Session 3 4-5pm Camp roundup – We'll use this time to summarize the sessions, share any final insights and discuss next steps. 6-8ish Socializing nearby (location TBA)

To prepare:

1. Connect. Bring a wifi-enabled computing device. We want to be able to share amongst ourselves and with the community at large. We'll be projecting a stream of the Twitter feed for the hashtag #curatecamp and hope to include community comments and questions in our discussions throughout the day. 2. Be an early bird. Try to be in the room and ready to go by 9am sharp so we can make the most of our time. Remember, it takes time to get your nametags, get plugged in and get online. 3. Talk like lightning. Consider doing a lightning talk. We'll have time for at least 10 during lunch and will give you an opportunity to sign up during our topic selection in the morning. Lightning talks should be no more than 5 minutes long and can be about anything—a project you're excited about, a tool, an idea, whatever. You don't need slides, but you're welcome to bring some and use the projector we'll provide for you. 4. Start camping now. On the wiki, camp has already begun. We need your help suggesting more topics for the day. So, go to http://wiki.curatecamp.org/index.php/CURATEcamp_iPRES_2012, get an account (it's easy, just request a login) and tell us what you'd like to talk about here: http://wiki.curatecamp.org/index.php/CURATEcamp_iPRES_2012_Discussion_Ideas. Or, if you would prefer, email one of the facilitators with your suggested topic and we'll put it on the wiki for you. So far, the following topics have been suggested (these are explained in more detail on the wiki):

  • Micro-service requirements
  • Service-oriented architecture for digital preservation
  • Re-use and collaboration
  • Requirements on file format registries

In keeping with our theme, Preservation Synthesis, the facilitators will do our best to relate these topics to a larger discussion about solving the digital preservation puzzle by integrating systems and services for a total curation solution.

The camp facilitators, Mark (@jordanheit) and Courtney (@snarkivist), are pretty sure we'll all be really excited at the end of the day and might want the opportunity to keep the conversation going. We'll find a watering hole nearby and reserve some space to hang out over drinks for a couple of hours after camp.
